cool jazz (1949), arr. Gil Evans

Miles Davis, trumpet; Gerry Mulligan, baritone sax;
J. J. Johnson, trombone; John Lewis, piano
Sandy Siegelstein, French horn; Nelson Boyd, bass
Bill Barber, tuba; Kenny Clarke, drums;
Lee Konitz, alto sax

This performance demonstrates the restraint of cool jazz, along with some other interesting modifications. The introduction of orchestral instruments (such as the French horn here) happened at the same time as cool but could also be seen as the beginning of third stream, which we will discuss shortly. Notice the lush harmonies of the instruments, again arranged in the fashion of the preceding big bands. The less aggressive bop melodies are still a major element of this style.
